On Sunday, 22nd September 2024, the NeuroSurgical Research Foundation (NRF) and Brain Tumour Research SA (BTRSA) hosted the highly anticipated 2nd Brain Tumour Symposium. Bringing together 52 experts, including researchers, neurosurgeons, oncologists, and patient support workers, all working towards a common goal—advancing brain tumour research and improving therapeutic outcomes for patients in South Australia.

The symposium showcased the power of collaboration, fostering closer interactions between the research and clinical communities. With 16 engaging presentations covering the latest developments in laboratory and clinical research, tumour biobanking and clinical trials, it was an invaluable opportunity for researchers and clinicians to share their expertise. The event was a melting pot of ideas, where groundbreaking findings in diagnostic technology, therapeutic approaches, and surgical techniques were exchanged, strengthening the collective knowledge base.

A special highlight was Fiona Hassman from the National Advocacy Service, who presented the crucial work her team is doing to support patients and their families, helping them navigate the complex brain tumour journey with advice, guidance and practical support to obtain financial assistance.

But beyond the formal presentations, it was the informal conversations that truly set this symposium apart. The sharing of ideas, the contacts made, and the passionate discussions on how to overcome the challenges posed by brain tumours underscored the immense value of having experts in one room. This cross-pollination of knowledge is precisely how breakthroughs happen—collaboration accelerates progress, and the future of brain tumour research in South Australia and the benefits this brings to patients looks more promising than ever.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, Servier, ICON Cancer Centre, and the Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB), whose support made this event possible. Their commitment to advancing research is integral to the fight against brain tumours.

Stay tuned for the exciting advancements that will emerge from this collaborative effort!
